The following pictures show women with things purchased with loan money, through ADIRE --  things that will help them earn a living for themselves and their families. Reports are from April 2008.

#207 with sewing machine  #207 with top she made #207 Sumitra Sethi.  With a sewing machine with embroidery attachments and a few months training on machine embroidery, Sumitra now earns by stitching ladies garments with hand and machine embroidery. She has paid back around 50% of the loan. Her work can be seen at the ADIRE website.

#211 Saraswati Pati.  Saraswati initially started farming mushrooms in a very small area (about 50 sq ft) near her house, around May 07. Her mushroom demand was so great she could not supply enough for the village itself. Working with her husband, she is now slowly expanding and selling in the local village market. She is planning to grow gradually in order to sell in the nearby city market this year.

Sasmita is also now selling manure to the bio-cooperative biogas digester which is used to prepare meals for the AdiVidya Mandir school kids. She has already paid back around 40% of the loan.

#215 Sanjukta Jena's loan purchased a cow. She is happy that she can add to her family’s income. She has paid back around 70% of her loan money and is planning to buy another cow this year with her savings.

#216 Sadhyarani Pani is building a better life for her family by producing toys. She was previously trained in soft toy making but didn’t have enough money to buy the materials. She used the loan to purchase the raw materials and sold a few toys in the local market, but it was not profitable enough, so she also started stitching dresses. She is making regular payments to repay her loan.

Biogas digester  #218 Sujata Sethi.  A 6 cu meter biogas digester was built as a part of SHAMA WELL bio cooperative program, funded jointly by a SHAMA WELL loan and ADIRE. Sujata Sethi and another SHAMA WELL woman, Bishnupriya Pati, managed the program from construction of the digester to its operation. Construction was completed in April 07.  For its initial operation ADIRE spent 1 truck load of manure, and after that manure for the digester is collected from SHAMA WELL women who have taken loans for cows. The digester was operational from July 07. Till now the gas is used for preparing two meals daily for AdiVidya Mandir school children.

#220 Annapurna Mahrana.  Annapurna purchased a cow with the loan. Starting in Oct 07, she started repaying her loan by selling milk to Adividya Mandir school, and has paid about 10%. The cow is expecting a calf now, so her milk has dried up. As a result, Annapurna has to wait a few more months to continue to payments. She also sells manure to the village biogas digester which supplies meals to Adividya Mandir school kids.

#226 Geetanjali Dash.  ADIRE helped Geetanjali build a 1 cu meter biogas plant for her family using the loan. The biogas became operational in November 07 and her family now has a new cooking system which is much healthier, without smoke in the house. Her daughter no longer has to collect firewood and now has more time to study. Geetanjali has started paying back from last two months.

About 70 women have received loans through SHAMA WELL. All of these loans have either been repaid in full within the time limit allotted, or are still within that time limit and have been paid partially. The rate of repayment is an indicator of the women's success in earnings. These loans have been used for a wide variety of purposes, as can be seen on the page linked just below.
